Srinagar, April 27: In a continued effort to promote environmental awareness and strengthen conservation education, students and faculty from the Faculty of Forestry, Benhama Ganderbal, and students of Sunshine Public School, Khushipora HMT Srinagar, visited Hokersar Wetland today for an educational field experience.
The visit was organized by the Wetlands Division, Hokersar, as part of its outreach and awareness initiatives aimed at sensitizing the younger generation and academic community about the ecological importance of wetlands.
During the field visit, participants were acquainted with the unique ecological characteristics of Hokersar Wetland, a designated Ramsar Site and one of the most significant wetlands in the Kashmir Valley. The students were provided firsthand exposure to the wetland ecosystem, including its hydrology, vegetation, and biodiversity.
The visiting group was briefed in detail by the Range Officer, Lakes Range, who elaborated on the conservation and management practices being implemented at Hokersar. Special emphasis was laid on habitat management, water regulation, and measures taken to address challenges such as encroachment, pollution, and invasive species.
The students were also sensitized about the importance of migratory birds that visit Hokersar Wetland annually. Detailed insights were shared regarding migratory patterns, species diversity, and the role of wetlands as critical stopover and wintering habitats for these birds.
The visiting students were accompanied by the Block Officer, Hokersar, along with field staff of the lakes range of Wetlands Division, who facilitated the visit and ensured an informative and engaging field experience.
Faculty members appreciated the initiative and highlighted the importance of such field-based learning experiences in complementing classroom education. The students actively participated in discussions, raising queries and expressing keen interest in wetland conservation.
The Department reiterated its commitment to engaging educational institutions and fostering a sense of responsibility among students as future custodians of the environment. Such initiatives are expected to inspire young minds to actively contribute towards the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity.
