From sapling to survivor: Jammu launches lifetime tracking of 60,000 trees

60,000 saplings adopted by students and teachers; survival data to be published monthly

JAMMU, AUGUST 24: The District Administration Jammu on Monday launched ‘Paalna’, an innovative plantation campaign under which every sapling planted across the district’s educational institutions has been assigned an adopter responsible for its survival and upkeep.

As part of the campaign, 60,000 saplings were planted across 815 educational institutions, with each sapling adopted by a student or teacher. The adopters will name their trees, care for them and submit monthly reports on their condition for one year.

The administration will also publish monthly data on the number of saplings that survive, making the campaign focus on survival rather than merely the number of trees planted.

Each tree guardian has been issued a certificate carrying a photograph of the adopted sapling. A designated guardian will also be responsible for the trees during school vacations to ensure that their care does not lapse when institutions remain closed.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) Jammu, led by Director IT/District Informatics Officer Sanjeev Kapoor, has developed a dedicated web portal and dashboard to track the survival, maintenance and growth of every individual plant throughout its lifetime.

“Every tree here has a name and a child responsible for it. And every month, we will publish how many are still alive,” Deputy Commissioner Jammu Dr Rakesh Minhas said.

“Our country has planted plenty of trees. But the number of survivors is not there. Jammu will produce that number. Paalna means to raise something — that is the difference between planting a tree and growing one,” he said.

The campaign was inaugurated at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Gandhi Nagar, where Class 8 student Muskan Mattoo planted a Moringa sapling and said she felt honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of caring for it.

Chief Conservator of Forests, Jammu, Dr VS Senthil Kumar, who inaugurated the campaign along with the Deputy Commissioner, described the initiative as a novel approach that assigns clear responsibility for every sapling.

He said the model could be replicated across the Jammu province.

A second plantation drive was subsequently led by Dr Senthil Kumar and Dr Minhas at GGMHSS Kandoli, Nagrota, while plantation activities were completed across all 815 institutions during the day.

The administration said subsequent phases of the initiative would extend the adoption mechanism to hospitals, other government institutions and roadside plantations.

Beyond increasing green cover, the initiative seeks to foster a lasting culture of environmental stewardship among students by linking each planted tree to an individual guardian and measurable survival outcomes.

Divisional Forest Officer Jammu Anurag Arya, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu Sher Singh, Range Officers and other officers of the Forest Department were also present during the campaign.
