Srinagar: The Tosamaidan Development Forum has welcomed and strongly endorsed the initiative aimed at developing ecologically sustainable mountain trails in Jammu and Kashmir, terming it a transformative step towards responsible tourism and world-class trekking and hiking experiences in the region.
In a statement, Sheikh Maqbool, Chief Spokesperson of the Tosamaidan Development Forum, said the initiative marks an important milestone in balancing environmental conservation with sustainable economic development. He noted that Jammu and Kashmir’s pristine landscapes, alpine meadows, dense forests and rich biodiversity give it immense potential to emerge as a premier global destination for trekking and hiking enthusiasts.
Sheikh Maqbool said the development of sustainable mountain trails would showcase the region’s natural beauty while ensuring that tourism growth remains environmentally responsible and ecologically sensitive. He added that the project aligns with global best practices in eco-tourism by minimising environmental impact, protecting fragile ecosystems and preserving the cultural and natural heritage of mountain regions.
The Forum observed that the initiative is expected to generate local livelihoods, particularly for rural and mountain communities. By involving local youth, guides, porters, homestay operators and small entrepreneurs, the project could create sustainable employment opportunities and help curb migration from remote areas.
Highlighting the importance of community participation, Sheikh Maqbool said that well-planned trekking and hiking infrastructure, combined with local involvement, would help position Jammu and Kashmir as a world-class adventure tourism destination. He said such initiatives could deliver long-term socio-economic benefits while fostering environmental stewardship and a sense of ownership among local communities.
Reiterating its commitment to sustainable development and conservation, the Tosamaidan Development Forum urged stakeholders, policymakers and tourism authorities to ensure that the project’s implementation remains transparent, community-centric and environmentally sound. The Forum maintained that the future of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir lies in sustainability, responsibility and respect for nature.
