Tangmarg: A galaxy of academicians, political leaders, civil society members, and cultural figures converged at Tangmarg on Saturday for the release of “Luminaries of Greater Gulmarg,” a new book authored by noted historian and academician Prof. Dr. Abdul Jabbar Gokhami.
The book, which documents the lives and contributions of iconic personalities from politics, education, art, trade, and literature in the greater Gulmarg region, was hailed as a landmark contribution to preserving the area’s cultural and historical heritage.
Two scholars, Dr. Arshid Ahmad Khan, Assistant Professor at Kashmir University’s North Campus, and Mustafa Sherrazi, a college lecturer, presented detailed reviews of the volume, praising its scholarly depth and vision.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamal emphasized the importance of preserving Tangmarg’s legacy and called for honesty and sincerity in public life. Prof. Gokhami said he was motivated to write the book to pay tribute to legendary figures of his homeland and ensure their memory endures for future generations.
Veteran historian Abdul Ahad described the work as a valuable historical record and “meeras” (heritage) for posterity, while JKCSF Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani highlighted the role of civil society in strengthening community bonds and safeguarding collective responsibilities.
The event drew an eclectic mix of participants, including former Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Mir, columnist Ahmad Kashmiri, and internationally acclaimed skier Shabir Wani. Their presence, organizers said, reflected the book’s wide appeal across professional and cultural domains.
