VMS distributes support aids to 200 visually impaired persons in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 23: Voluntary Medicare Society on Friday organised a large-scale distribution and training programme of Saarthi Smart Canes and smart mobility devices for 200 visually impaired persons from across Jammu and Kashmir at its head office in Bemina.

The initiative aimed to promote independent mobility, safety, dignity and inclusion for visually impaired persons through the use of innovative assistive technology.

Dr Akramullah Tak presided over the function. Also present on the occasion were Prof. (Dr.) Mir Mohammad Maqbool, Amit, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Kaloo, Prof. Masooda Yaseen, Ayoub Bhat, businessman Bilal from Hyundai Showroom and Arshad.

During the event, Arshad announced that Athwas would sponsor advanced assistive devices for five visually impaired students as an initial step towards supporting accessibility initiatives.

Amit said his company had sponsored the distribution of smart canes as its first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project for visually impaired persons in northern India, adding that the initiative had commenced in Kashmir. He also announced that the next distribution camp would be organised in Jammu on Monday.

Torchit Electronics, a National Award-winning social startup, partnered as the technology and implementation partner for the programme.

Dinesh K. Bahl, supported by VMS, conducted a detailed hands-on training session for beneficiaries on the use and functionality of Saarthi Smart Canes and smart mobility devices.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the sponsors, Voluntary Medicare Society and supporting organisations for introducing advanced assistive technologies in Jammu and Kashmir and helping enhance confidence and independent mobility among visually impaired individuals.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a reaffirmation of the organisation’s commitment towards inclusion, accessibility, rehabilitation and empowerment of persons with disabilities across the region.
