Srinagar, May 25: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Sunday praised the Jammu and Kashmir administration and various rescue agencies for the successful evacuation of more than 300 tourists stranded following a technical snag in the Gulmarg Gondola service.

In a statement issued here, KCC&I President Javid Ahmad Tenga said the prompt and coordinated rescue operation demonstrated the preparedness and efficiency of the administration in handling emergencies at major tourist destinations.

According to the statement, over 300 tourists were trapped inside 65 gondola cabins after a technical malfunction halted operations, leaving several passengers suspended mid-air for hours, with some cabins nearly 500 feet above the ground.

Despite adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, rescue teams carried out a nearly seven-hour-long operation to evacuate all stranded passengers safely.

Tenga commended the efforts of agencies involved in the operation, including the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Chinar Corps, district administration, local authorities and the Tourism Department.

He also appreciated the presence and supervision of senior officials, police officers and ministers who monitored the rescue efforts and ensured inter-departmental coordination during the emergency.

“The Jammu and Kashmir Government and all agencies involved deserve appreciation for their swift response, professionalism and commitment in ensuring the safety of tourists under extremely challenging circumstances,” Tenga said.

He added that the successful rescue operation reinforced confidence in Kashmir as a safe and responsible tourism destination.

Tenga further said tourism remains the backbone of Kashmir’s economy and stressed that the safety and confidence of visitors must remain a top priority.

He also expressed hope that technical assessments and preventive measures would be undertaken to further strengthen operational safety standards at tourism infrastructure facilities across Jammu & Kashmir.
