New Delhi, May 4: India’s fuel supply remains stable and well-managed despite volatility in global crude markets triggered by the West Asia crisis, with the government implementing a series of measures to protect consumers and ensure uninterrupted availability.
At a joint briefing at the National Media Centre, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said all refineries are operating at high capacity and maintaining adequate crude inventories.
Officials confirmed that petrol and diesel stocks are sufficient across the country, with all retail outlets functioning normally and no disruption in supply reported.
To cushion consumers from rising global crude prices, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre. Additionally, export levies on diesel and aviation turbine fuel have been cut to stabilise domestic availability.
The government has also ensured full supply of compressed natural gas (CNG) for transport and domestic PNG, while industrial gas supply has been maintained at up to 80 percent of normal levels.
Alternative fuel measures have been introduced to ease pressure on LPG demand. These include increased allocation of kerosene and additional coal supply by Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited for small consumers.
Enforcement actions have intensified to prevent hoarding and black marketing. Over 1,570 raids were conducted nationwide in a single day, with penalties imposed on hundreds of LPG distributors and several licences suspended.
The government has also urged states to play an active role under the Essential Commodities Act by monitoring supply chains and ensuring strict enforcement.
Officials highlighted that digital tools, monitoring systems, and coordinated action between central and state authorities have been critical in maintaining stability.
In addition, petrochemical supply chains have been secured through a dedicated inter-ministerial working group to ensure uninterrupted availability of critical inputs for industries such as pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
The government reiterated its appeal to citizens to avoid panic buying, rely on official information, and adopt energy-saving practices.
Despite global uncertainties, authorities expressed confidence that India’s diversified supply sources, strong refining capacity, and proactive policy interventions will continue to ensure energy security and price stability in the coming months.
