New Delhi, May 4: The government on Monday said domestic LPG supplies remain stable across the country despite disruptions caused by the West Asia situation, with no reports of shortages and a significant push towards cleaner fuel alternatives like piped natural gas (PNG).
During the inter-ministerial briefing at the National Media Centre, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said LPG distribution networks are functioning normally, with no dry-outs reported at distributorships.
Officials noted that online LPG bookings surged to 99 percent, reflecting increased reliance on digital platforms. Delivery authentication mechanisms have also strengthened, with about 94 percent of deliveries verified through digital codes to prevent diversion.
To ensure supply stability, the government has prioritised LPG distribution for domestic households, hospitals, and key industries. Commercial LPG supply has been restored to about 70 percent of pre-crisis levels.
A major focus has been on supporting vulnerable groups, particularly migrant labourers. Since April 2026, over 23.58 lakh 5-kg free trade LPG cylinders have been sold, with distribution doubled in several states. Oil marketing companies have also conducted more than 10,000 awareness camps to promote these cylinders.
Parallelly, the government is accelerating the shift towards PNG as a long-term solution. Since March 2026, around 6.12 lakh PNG connections have been activated, with infrastructure ready for an additional 2.67 lakh connections. Nearly 6.79 lakh new consumers have registered for PNG services.
Authorities said over 43,000 consumers have voluntarily surrendered LPG connections in favour of PNG, indicating growing adoption of cleaner fuel alternatives.
To support this transition, companies such as Indraprastha Gas Limited, Mahanagar Gas Limited, GAIL Gas Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited are offering incentives for new connections.
The government has also introduced policy measures to fast-track pipeline infrastructure, including a new regulatory framework under the Essential Commodities Act to streamline approvals and reduce delays.
Officials emphasised that while LPG supply remains stable, citizens are encouraged to avoid panic buying, use digital booking systems, and adopt energy conservation practices.
