Srinagar, April 13: A plantation and cleanliness drive was organised on Monday at the Hokersar Wetland as part of efforts to promote environmental awareness and strengthen conservation measures at the ecologically significant site.
The initiative was carried out jointly by the Department of Wildlife Protection and the Ahsan Foundation, with participation from departmental officials, field staff and volunteers.
During the programme, native saplings were planted at designated locations around the wetland, while a parallel cleanliness अभियान focused on removing plastic waste and other litter from vulnerable areas.
Speaking on the occasion, Range Officer Lakes Sajid Farooq highlighted the ecological importance of Hokersar, describing it as a key habitat for both migratory and resident bird species in the Kashmir Valley.
He said such drives not only contribute to improving the ecological health of the wetland but also help raise public awareness about the need to protect fragile ecosystems. He emphasised that community participation remains critical for the long-term conservation of the wetland.
Officials noted that Hokersar Wetland supports thousands of migratory birds annually and plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity in the region. Participants were sensitised about the threats posed by pollution, encroachments and other human-induced pressures.
The programme also underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies and civil society organisations in safeguarding natural habitats and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
The Department of Wildlife Protection reiterated its commitment to preserving Hokersar Wetland and urged the public to actively support conservation efforts aimed at protecting the Ramsar site for future generations.
