SRINAGAR, July 11: Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL), Faz Lul Haseeb, on Friday conducted an extensive inspection of Srinagar’s historic water channels, directing officials to undertake detailed technical assessments and documentation to facilitate their conservation and restoration.
The inspection covered several traditional waterways, including Kutte Kul, Sonar Kul, Rainawari Kul and other interconnected channels, with the objective of assessing their present condition, hydraulic connectivity and factors affecting their overall health.
During the visit, Haseeb inspected various stretches of the waterways, reviewing issues such as silt accumulation, excessive vegetation, encroachments, blockages, discharge points and other site-specific concerns requiring technical evaluation.
He instructed officers and engineers to carry out comprehensive field documentation and scientific assessments of the inspected channels to establish an accurate baseline of their current condition for future restoration planning.
Highlighting the importance of the city’s traditional waterways, Haseeb said they are an integral part of Srinagar’s historical and ecological landscape. He stressed that conserving and rejuvenating these channels is essential for reducing waterlogging, improving environmental sustainability and preserving the city’s centuries-old water heritage.
The CEO also called for close coordination among all stakeholder departments, saying scientific assessment, coordinated planning and institutional collaboration would be crucial for the long-term conservation and revival of the water bodies.
During the inspection, Haseeb interacted with local residents and appealed to them to support efforts to protect the waterways by refraining from dumping waste into the channels and cooperating with the administration in maintaining their cleanliness and ecological health.
Senior officers and engineers of Srinagar Smart City Limited accompanied the CEO during the inspection.
