SRINAGAR, AUGUST 28: The Group of Concerned Citizens Jammu & Kashmir (GCC) held a memorial meeting to remember former forest and environment expert GH Kango, recalling his exemplary contributions to soil and water conservation, forestry, administration and philanthropy in Jammu & Kashmir.
The “G.H. Kango Memorial Meeting” was held in Srinagar on Friday and was presided over by Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Chairman of the Group.
Besides the Chairman, several GCC members, including GJ Nehvi, Syed Raza Shah Madni, Latif-ul-Zaman Deva, Mohammad Rafi, Er Hakim Iftikhar, Manzoor Ahmad Tak and Prof Dr Farooq Ahmad Peer, spoke on the occasion.
Several of Kango’s former colleagues, both senior and younger, recalled their personal and official association with him over the years. Speakers highlighted his intellectual depth, administrative acumen and professional expertise.
They particularly recalled his pioneering work in soil and water conservation across Jammu & Kashmir, besides his contribution to forest conservation and management.
Speakers said Kango’s expertise in forestry, environment and ecology had influenced and inspired a new generation of professionals in these fields.
The participants also recalled his philanthropic activities and his efforts to assist poor and needy people through his family trust.
An aspect of Kango’s personality that was less widely known was highlighted by Mohammad Rafi, who recalled that Kango was also a gifted artist and accomplished illustrator.
Rafi said the group had the opportunity to host an exhibition of Kango’s artworks at MET Sopore, followed by another event at Baghaat.
The meeting concluded with Dua-e-Maghfirah and Fateha for the departed soul, led by Prof Dr Farooq Ahmad Peer.
The programme was organised as an expression of respect and remembrance for Kango and his longstanding contributions to public service and society in Jammu & Kashmir.
