Srinagar, August 9: Ghulam Hassan Kango, IFS (retd), former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Jammu & Kashmir, has passed away, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, environmentalists and people associated with conservation efforts in the region.
Mr Kango is remembered as an accomplished forester, a committed environmentalist and a person known for his integrity, humility and dedication to the protection of forests and the natural environment of Jammu & Kashmir.
Those who knew him recalled his long association with the Forest Department and his contribution to forest management and environmental conservation. His passing was described as a loss to the conservation community as well as to those who had known him personally.
Founder of Ziraat Times, Arjimand Hussain, also expressed his condolences, remembering Kango for his distinguished service to the Forest Department and his commitment to environmental conservation.
Hussain said Kango’s contribution went beyond his official responsibilities and that his concern for forests, biodiversity and the environment had earned him respect among people working for conservation in Jammu & Kashmir.
He offered his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.
Environmental policy group convenor Faiz Bakshi said the conservation community had lost “a wonderful human being and a nature lover”. He prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength for the bereaved family.
The passing of Kango has been widely mourned by members of the environmental and forestry community, who remembered his professional service and personal commitment to safeguarding Jammu & Kashmir’s natural heritage.

Environmental activist and businessman Manzoor Wangnoo, while condoling his death, described Kango as a “true environmentalist” and a “pious, noble soul”, besides being a dear friend and sincere well-wisher.
“His affection, sincerity and dedication to the environment will always remain close to my heart,” Wangnoo said, praying that Allah grants Kango Jannat-ul-Firdous and gives patience to his bereaved family.
Amin Malik also expressed deep sorrow over Kango’s demise, describing him as an “accomplished forester” and a “noble soul”.
