JKEDI trains field officials to identify early stress in MSMEs

Capacity-building programme focuses on data-driven assessment, early warning signals and timely intervention

Srinagar, Aug 27: The Jammu & Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) organised a one-day capacity-building programme on MSME Health Clinics at its Sempora, Pampore campus on Thursday, aimed at strengthening the ability of field-level officials to assess the financial, operational and overall health of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The programme was held under the leadership of Director JKEDI Mohammad Younis Malik, JKAS, and brought together Industry Promotion Officers (IPOs) from District Industries Centres (DICs), Small Business Development Unit (SBDU) officials associated with Mission YUVA, and District Nodal Officers (DNOs) of JKEDI.

The programme focused on developing a practical understanding of the MSME Health Clinic framework and equipping participating officials with tools to identify early signs of financial, operational and other forms of business stress.

During the sessions, participants were introduced to a data-driven approach to assessing enterprise health, with discussions covering indicators such as GST turnover and filing patterns, EPFO compliance, electricity consumption and payment trends, Udyam-related data and key financial parameters.

The trainers emphasised that individual indicators should not be assessed in isolation. Instead, multiple data points need to be examined collectively to identify emerging patterns, assess the nature and severity of stress and understand the underlying reasons for an enterprise’s difficulties.

Case studies used for practical assessment

A key component of the programme was a series of case-study-based exercises, through which participants applied the framework to practical business situations.

Officials analysed different enterprise-level data points to assess the health of MSMEs, identify early warning signals, determine the severity of emerging stress and consider appropriate corrective measures.

The exercises were intended to strengthen the participants’ ability to move beyond routine data collection and develop a more analytical understanding of the challenges confronting individual enterprises.

The interactive sessions also provided officials an opportunity to discuss field-level challenges and strengthen their capabilities in assessing and responding to emerging problems faced by MSMEs.

The programme concluded with an emphasis on adopting a proactive, evidence-based and field-oriented approach to MSME support.

JKEDI said early identification of financial or operational difficulties can enable authorities and support institutions to intervene in a timely manner, potentially preventing emerging problems from developing into more serious business distress.

The participating officials actively engaged in the technical sessions, discussions and case-based exercises, making the programme a practical capacity-building initiative focused on strengthening institutional support for MSMEs in Jammu and Kashmir.
