Experts discuss combining crop production with solar power generation, applications in apple cultivation and aquaculture
Shuhama, Aug 27: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ganderbal, SKUAST-K, in collaboration with the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), Bengaluru, organised a one-day capacity-building workshop on agrivoltaics, focusing on the potential of integrating agricultural production with solar photovoltaic technology.
The workshop aimed to create awareness among farmers and other stakeholders about agrivoltaic systems, which allow agricultural activities and renewable energy generation to take place on the same land. The approach can potentially improve land-use efficiency, diversify farm incomes and contribute to climate-resilient agriculture.
The programme began with a welcome and introductory address by Dr. Faiqa Syeed, Scientist, KVK Ganderbal.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Malik, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Ganderbal, highlighted the potential of agrivoltaics as an emerging approach for combining sustainable agriculture with renewable energy generation.
He said such systems could provide additional income opportunities for farmers while addressing challenges arising from increasing energy demand, climate variability and growing pressure on agricultural land.
During the technical session, Sheikh Madiha Syed, Senior Analyst, CSTEP, explained various aspects of agrivoltaic systems, including solar-panel configurations, crop selection, microclimate management, irrigation requirements, energy generation and land-use efficiency.
She also discussed the economic opportunities associated with the adoption of agrivoltaic systems and their potential relevance to agricultural communities.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist, KVK Ganderbal, highlighted the potential application of agrivoltaics in high-density apple cultivation. She discussed how the integration of solar infrastructure with orchards could contribute to improved resource management and enhance crop resilience.
Another presentation by Dr. Faiqa Syeed focused on the potential of deploying solar arrays over open-water aquaculture sites, highlighting possible synergies between renewable energy generation and aquaculture activities.
The workshop also featured an interactive session in which participants engaged with the experts and raised questions concerning the technical, economic and practical aspects of adopting agrivoltaic systems.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Farooq Ahanger, Scientist, KVK Ganderbal.
The organisers said the workshop was aimed at strengthening awareness and technical capacity around emerging agricultural technologies and exploring their potential contribution to more efficient, diversified and climate-resilient farming systems in the region.
