JAMMU, AUGUST 27: Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) on Thursday signed an agreement with PMI Electro Mobility Solutions Private Limited for the addition of 25 electric buses to Jammu’s existing public transport fleet under the Government of India’s PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar was present on the occasion.
The agreement was signed by JSCL Chief Executive Officer Dr. Devansh Yadav on behalf of the Housing and Urban Development Department, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, and COO-SPV Operations, PMI Electro Mobility Solutions Private Limited, Chandra Kant Goyal.
JSCL is currently operating 100 electric buses in Jammu. The addition of 25 buses is expected to further expand the city’s clean public transport network and improve access to sustainable mobility.
As part of the programme, PMI Electro Mobility Solutions made a presentation before the Chairman, JSCL and Divisional Commissioner Jammu, showcasing its electric bus models and highlighting their features, passenger-oriented facilities and mobility solutions.
Dr. Yadav also briefed the Divisional Commissioner about the PM e-Bus Sewa project, the proposed fleet expansion and the status of supporting infrastructure, including the Bhagwati Nagar Depot.
The new buses will be operated from the Bhagwati Nagar Depot, which is being developed by JSCL as a dedicated electric bus and mobility facility. The foundation stone for the depot was laid by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier this month.
The depot, along with the expansion of the electric bus fleet, is aimed at creating the infrastructure required to support Jammu’s growing electric public transport network.
Speaking on the occasion, Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said the expansion of electric public transport was an important step towards meeting the mobility requirements of a rapidly growing city.
He said the addition of new buses and development of the Bhagwati Nagar Depot would strengthen Jammu’s public transport infrastructure while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
“We must continue to focus on mobility solutions that are efficient, accessible and aligned with the future needs of the city,” he said.
Dr. Devansh Yadav said Jammu had already embarked on its transition towards electric mobility and that the latest agreement would take the initiative further.
“With the development of the Bhagwati Nagar Depot, we are also creating the infrastructure required to support the next generation of public transport in Jammu,” he said.
Yadav added that strengthening public transport was an important component of Jammu’s ongoing urban transformation and would provide citizens with cleaner and more sustainable mobility options.
Chandra Kant Goyal said PMI Electro Mobility Solutions was pleased to partner with JSCL to further strengthen Jammu’s electric public transport network.
The company, he said, was committed to supporting Jammu’s transition towards sustainable and modern mobility while delivering a high-quality public transport experience for residents.
Under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme, 25 electric buses have been allocated to Jammu, with Thursday’s agreement marking the beginning of their implementation in the city.
Another 75 electric buses are proposed to be added to Jammu under the scheme, taking the planned augmentation to 100 additional buses. The unified procurement process for these buses is being managed at the national level by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
With JSCL’s existing fleet of 100 electric buses, the planned expansion could take Jammu’s electric bus fleet to 200 buses.
The expansion assumes significance as Jammu continues to grow as a major centre for administration, tourism, commerce and economic activity. A modern and sustainable public transport system is expected to play an important role in supporting this growth while improving the city’s liveability and reducing dependence on conventional mobility.
The expansion of the electric bus fleet, coupled with the Bhagwati Nagar Depot, marks another step in Jammu’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable urban transportation.
