SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the inauguration of the much-anticipated Katra-Srinagar direct rail link, describing it as a “historic and transformative” step for Jammu and Kashmir’s connectivity and economic development.
The rail link, scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, is expected to significantly bolster regional connectivity while offering a reliable alternative to the often-disrupted Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
In a statement issued to Ziraat Times on Wednesday, the Chamber said the all-weather rail corridor would provide much-needed relief to commuters and serve as a vital economic artery for the region.
“This development addresses a longstanding need for safe, consistent, and year-round transportation in the Valley,” the Chamber said, expressing appreciation for the efforts of the Prime Minister and the Central Government in bringing the project to fruition.
KCCI highlighted the rail link’s potential to spur growth in key sectors such as tourism, trade, and logistics by cutting travel time and operational costs. The Chamber also expressed hope that direct train services from Srinagar to Jammu and Delhi would be introduced soon, without intermediate halts, further enhancing long-distance passenger connectivity.
Emphasizing the importance of freight transport, KCCI urged the government to commence cargo train services from Srinagar. “Freight operations will unlock the full economic potential of Kashmir by enabling efficient transportation of horticultural produce, handicrafts, and other local goods to major Indian markets,” the statement read.
The Chamber said such services would benefit farmers, artisans, and traders by improving market access, reducing transit losses, and ensuring timely imports of essential raw materials. This, in turn, would enhance production efficiency, streamline supply chains, and lower logistics costs for local industries.
Reaffirming its commitment to supporting infrastructure development, KCCI called for sustained investment in transportation networks to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the region.
