Budgam, August 9: The Wildlife Protection Department’s Wetlands Division successfully trapped and rescued two leopards in Budgam late Saturday night following a sustained surveillance and capture operation aimed at mitigating human–wildlife conflict.
The leopards were captured at around 11 pm on August 9 after wildlife officials maintained round-the-clock surveillance to track their movements and assess their activity in the area.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Range Officer, Lakes Range/Hokersar, Sajid Farooq, with field staff of the Wildlife Protection Department continuously monitoring the situation.
According to the department, trap cages were strategically placed at suitable locations based on observations of the leopards’ movement patterns. Live bait was also used to facilitate their safe capture.
After several hours of monitoring and field efforts, both leopards were successfully trapped in a single cage at around 11 pm. Officials said the operation was carried out with due caution, with public safety and the welfare of the animals kept as the primary considerations.
The department said the operation involved extended deployment of frontline personnel, continuous surveillance and timely mobilisation of resources, with no untoward incident reported during the capture.
The Wildlife Protection Department said its field teams respond promptly whenever wild animals enter human-dominated areas or pose a potential threat to public safety, while following established wildlife-management protocols.
It said such interventions are aimed at addressing human–wildlife conflict while ensuring that rescued animals are handled with due care and that wildlife conservation remains a key consideration.
The successful rescue of the two leopards, the department said, reflected its continued efforts to strengthen field-level response to human–wildlife conflict and safeguard both local communities and wildlife.
