Nowgam Traders Association Elects Hilal Wani As President; Parvaiz Bhat as Gen Secty

Senior Vice president & Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din Ensures Credible Electoral Process

Srinagar, 13 June: The Traders Association Nowgam, Srinagar successfully conducted its elections on Saturday. The elections were held under the supervision of KTMF Senior Vice President and Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din, who oversaw the entire electoral process. The polls witnessed an overwhelming response from members, marking a historic chapter in the association’s democratic journey.

Out of 416 eligible voters, a total of 411 members cast their votes, reflecting a remarkable voter turnout and the strong commitment of traders towards democratic representation.

For the post of President, Hilal Ahmad Wani emerged victorious by securing 207 votes, defeating his opponent Javaid Ahmad Najar, who received 198 votes. A total of five votes were declared invalid.

For the post of General Secretary, Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat secured victory with 201 votes. His opponents, Mohammad Hanief Bhat and Rouf Ahmad Bhat, received 176 votes and 31 votes respectively.

The polling process was managed by Presiding Officers Bashir Ahmad Bhat and Sofi Mohammad Shafi, while Jan Mohammad and Mohammad Yousuf served as Polling Officers.

Observers from the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), including General Secretary Khalid Baba and Chief Organiser Sajjad Ahmad, closely monitored the proceedings throughout day. Officials from Police Station Nowgam, media representatives, polling agents and members of the trading community were also present throughout the election process.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Election Commissioner Sofi Mohi-ud-Din congratulated the newly elected office-bearers and appreciated the role played by all stakeholders in ensuring the success of the elections.

“These historic elections stand as a shining example of unity, maturity and democratic values within the trading community. For the past six months, our focus remained on creating a transparent and credible electoral framework and I am pleased that the entire process was conducted peacefully, smoothly, freely and fairly. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all general members, presiding officers, polling staff, polling agents, observers, Nowgam Police Station, media representatives and every individual who contributed to making these elections a success. I especially congratulate both the winning candidates and those who contested with dignity and respect for the democratic process,” said Sofi Mohi-ud-Din.

Newly elected President Hilal Ahmad Wani thanked the traders for reposing their trust in him. He said “I am deeply grateful to the members of Traders Association Nowgam for their confidence and support. This victory belongs to the entire trading community. I assure all traders that I will work with sincerity, dedication and transparency to address their concerns and strengthen our association for the collective welfare of all stakeholders”.

Newly elected General Secretary Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat also expressed gratitude to the voters. He stated “I sincerely thank all members who participated in this democratic exercise and supported me. I look forward to working closely with the President, executive body and traders to safeguard the interests of our business community and contribute positively to the development of Nowgam market”.

KTMF General Secretary Khalid Baba hailed the election process as a model for other trade bodies. He said “The remarkable voter turnout and peaceful conduct of polling reflect the confidence of traders in democratic institutions. The successful completion of these elections demonstrates the collective commitment of the business community towards transparency, accountability and responsible leadership. KTMF congratulates the newly elected team and wishes them success in serving the traders of Nowgam”.

Polling agents and members also appreciated the transparent manner in which the elections were conducted. Several polling agents and members said.”We witnessed a fair, impartial and well-organized election process. The high voter turnout and peaceful atmosphere are a testament to the confidence traders have in the Election Commission and the democratic process”.
