Unemployment edges up to 5.1% in March; labour participation sees marginal dip

Ziraat Times News Desk

New Delhi, April 15: India’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 5.1% in March 2026, while overall labour force participation and employment indicators showed broad stability with minor fluctuations, according to the latest monthly bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The data, compiled by the National Statistical Office (NSO), indicates a modest softening in labour market conditions compared to February, particularly in urban areas.

Labour force participation dips slightly

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 years and above stood at 55.4% in March, down from 55.9% in February.

  • Rural LFPR declined to 58.0% from 58.7%

  • Urban LFPR remained largely unchanged at 50.3%

Female participation saw a marginal decline, with overall female LFPR falling to 34.4% in March from 35.3% in February.

  • Rural female LFPR stood at 38.9%

  • Urban female LFPR was significantly lower at 25.2%

Employment levels remain broadly stable

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR)—a measure of employment—remained largely stable.

  • Overall WPR stood at 52.6% in March

  • Rural WPR declined slightly to 55.5% from 56.3%

  • Urban WPR remained almost unchanged at 46.8%

Officials noted that employment levels in urban areas showed minimal movement for both men and women during the month.

Unemployment sees modest rise

The Unemployment Rate (UR) increased to 5.1% in March from 4.9% in February.

The rise was primarily driven by urban areas:

  • Urban unemployment increased to 6.8% from 6.6%

  • Rural female unemployment remained largely stable during the period

Male unemployment in rural areas, however, saw a marginal increase.

Survey coverage and methodology

The estimates are based on responses from over 3.75 lakh individuals, including more than 2.13 lakh in rural areas and 1.61 lakh in urban areas.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) serves as India’s primary source for employment and unemployment data. Since January 2025, the survey has been redesigned to provide monthly and quarterly estimates using the Current Weekly Status approach.

Trend indicates relative stability

The March data suggests that while headline employment indicators remain relatively stable, there are signs of pressure in urban labour markets and a slight decline in workforce participation, particularly among women.

The findings are part of a continuing monthly series, with previous bulletins released from April 2025 onwards.
