Srinagar, April 9: In a bid to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen public awareness on conservation, the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO), in collaboration with the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) and Social Forestry Division Srinagar, on Thursday organised a plantation drive in Srinagar.
The programme brought together specially-abled students, teachers and volunteers from Bilaliya Educational Institute (BEI), along with environmentalists, academicians and civil society members, in a collective effort to encourage community participation in protecting natural resources.
Speaking on the occasion, VMS president Dr. Muhammad Maqbool said plantation drives must be seen as meaningful interventions rather than symbolic exercises.
He said community-led environmental initiatives were essential for safeguarding public health and ensuring long-term ecological sustainability.
NLCO chairman Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo said fragile ecosystems such as Nigeen Lake require sustained conservation efforts and greater public ownership.
He stressed the need for continuous awareness campaigns, especially among young people, to protect water bodies and green spaces.
Renowned psychiatrist Dr. Mushtaq Margoob highlighted the link between environmental health and mental well-being, saying a clean and green environment contributes positively to emotional balance, social harmony and overall quality of life.
Former Conservator of Forests Farooq Geelani said afforestation and conservation programmes are vital for preserving biodiversity and ecological balance.
He said involving students in such activities helps build long-term awareness and responsibility toward the environment.
VMS secretary Dr. Farooq Kaloo underscored the need for sustained campaigns and community engagement to address growing environmental challenges.
Environmental activist Peerzada Fayaz Ahmad appreciated the participation of youth and civil society, saying such initiatives help build a culture of environmental responsibility.
DD News producer Asif Nabi Khan said the media has an important role in spreading awareness on ecological issues and encouraging wider public participation in conservation efforts.
Social activist Dr. Touseef Bhat said environmental sustainability requires shared responsibility and stronger social commitment to climate-conscious practices.
Bilaliya Educational Institute principal Nissar Ahmad welcomed the initiative and said involving students in environmental activities helps nurture responsibility and civic awareness at an early stage.
The event concluded with the plantation of saplings and a pledge by participants to continue supporting environmental conservation efforts.
VMS vice-president Prof. Masooda Yasin, while presenting the vote of thanks, appreciated the contribution of all stakeholders and said such grassroots initiatives are key to building a greener and healthier future.
