Jammu, Feb 1: Farmers in Jammu and Kashmir have given a mixed response to the Union Budget 2026–27, with some measures drawing appreciation while others have raised expectations for greater region-specific support.

Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Council president Tajinder Singh Wazir said that farmers in the Union Territory are optimistic about the proposed increase in the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan limit from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh, terming it a timely relief. However, he said there is a strong expectation that the Centre will announce special relief measures for farmers affected by floods and droughts, particularly in border areas of the Union Territory.

Wazir noted that border-area farmers are hopeful for compensation for land losses and the introduction of pension schemes for rural residents, given the unique challenges faced by these regions. He said such targeted interventions are essential to address the long-standing vulnerabilities of farmers living in border belts.

At the same time, the Kissan Council welcomed several initiatives announced in the Union Budget. These include the creation of the Bharat Vistaar Artificial Intelligence platform for agriculture, a stronger focus on high-value horticulture, and the promotion of the dairy sector with scope for international collaboration. Wazir said the emphasis on modern technology and innovation in agriculture could help improve productivity and income levels if implemented effectively in Jammu and Kashmir.

Overall, he said, while the budget offers encouraging signals for agricultural modernization, farmers in Jammu & Kashmir continue to look for concrete assurances on disaster relief, compensation, and social security measures tailored to the region’s specific needs.
