New Delhi, January 1: State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in the country, marking a major step toward improving call quality and connectivity, particularly in areas with weak mobile signals.
The nationwide rollout, announced on New Year’s Day, enables BSNL customers to make and receive voice calls and send messages using a Wi-Fi network instead of relying solely on cellular coverage. The service is especially beneficial in indoor locations, basements, and remote or rural areas where mobile signals are often weak or inconsistent.
According to BSNL, VoWiFi allows seamless calling using the customer’s existing mobile number without the need for any third-party application. The service supports smooth handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks, ensuring uninterrupted communication. Calls made through VoWiFi are billed as per existing voice plans, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi usage.
The service is available across all telecom circles and works on most modern smartphones that support Wi-Fi calling. Customers can activate the feature through their handset settings. BSNL stated that VoWiFi can be accessed using any broadband connection, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other Wi-Fi networks.
The rollout forms part of BSNL’s broader network modernisation programme aimed at enhancing service quality and expanding digital connectivity, particularly in underserved and remote regions of the country. The initiative is expected to improve customer experience while reducing network congestion on traditional cellular infrastructure.
For device compatibility and assistance, customers have been advised to contact their nearest BSNL customer service centre or the BSNL helpline at 1800-150-3.
