GST has built public trust; next wave of reforms coming: PM Modi

New Delhi, Dec. 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the Winter Session of Parliament must serve as a platform for constructive debate, national interest and policy-driven outcomes, stressing that it should not become an arena for political theatrics or post-election frustration.

Speaking to the media at Parliament before the session began, the Prime Minister said the upcoming weeks would “infuse new energy” into the country’s efforts to accelerate development. “This session is not a ritual. It is a source of renewed energy for the nation’s journey toward rapid progress,” he said.

Referring to the recent Bihar elections, Mr. Modi said India had once again demonstrated the strength of its democratic traditions, noting record voter turnout and a rise in women’s participation. “India has proven that democracy can deliver,” he said, adding that the world was closely observing how India’s democratic institutions were also driving its economic rise.

Mr. Modi urged all political parties to keep the focus on national interest and adopt a balanced, responsible approach inside Parliament. He cautioned against letting electoral victories breed arrogance or defeats breed obstruction. “The Winter Session must reflect responsibility and dignity,” he said.

The Prime Minister also voiced concern that many first-time and young MPs were not getting sufficient opportunities to contribute. He called on party leaders to ensure meaningful participation from new parliamentarians. “The House, and the nation, must benefit from the insights and energy of the new generation,” he said.

Emphasising the need for informed and accurate debate, Mr. Modi said members should strengthen what works well and offer constructive critique where needed. Parliament, he reminded, is a place for policy and delivery, not slogan-shouting. “There is no shortage of places elsewhere for theatrics. In Parliament, our focus must be on policy,” he added.

Mr. Modi also highlighted the significance of the session as it marks the beginning of the Upper House under its new Chairman, expressing confidence in his leadership.

Pointing to the success of GST reforms in building public trust, the Prime Minister said the Winter Session would advance key initiatives aligned with India’s next generation of reforms.

Expressing concern over recent parliamentary trends, he said some parties were using Parliament as a “warm-up ground” for elections or a space to vent frustration after electoral setbacks. “The country has not accepted these methods. It is time to change their approach. I am even ready to offer tips on how to perform better,” he remarked.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to national progress, the Prime Minister concluded, “The country is moving toward new heights, and this House will play a vital role in giving new strength to that journey.”
