Srinagar: In a major step towards promoting sustainable urban transport, the Jammu and Kashmir Government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for the development of the Srinagar Water Metro Project, inspired by the successful Kochi Water Metro model.

Announcing the development, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the project aims to enhance waterway connectivity along Dal Lake and the Jhelum River, reduce traffic congestion in the summer capital, and promote eco-friendly urban mobility.

“This initiative will provide a modern, efficient, and sustainable mode of public transport for Srinagar residents while preserving the city’s unique aquatic ecosystem,” the Chief Minister said.

The Srinagar Water Metro will integrate with existing transport networks, offering commuters an alternative to road travel and easing vehicular pressure in the city’s core areas. The project is expected to boost tourism, improve last-mile connectivity, and support the government’s vision of green and inclusive urban infrastructure.

Omar Abdullah also revealed that a similar water transport project is being planned for Jammu region, with Akhnoor and Reasi identified as potential locations for development under the initiative.

Officials said that detailed project reports (DPRs) and feasibility studies would be undertaken jointly by the J&K Government and IWAI to finalise routes, infrastructure, and environmental safeguards before the execution phase.

The MoU marks an important milestone in the state’s efforts to promote sustainable mobility and revive traditional waterways as modern transport corridors.
