Srinagar: After decades of delay, the long-pending construction of the Poonch–Tangmarg road, a vital link between the Pir Panjal and north Kashmir, is finally poised to begin. The project, sanctioned by the Union Defence Ministry and to be executed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is expected to significantly cut travel time by 3 to 4 hours and strengthen economic and social ties between districts.

According to official sources, all necessary approvals have been granted, and the project will soon move into the implementation phase once clearance is obtained from the Wildlife Department. The road will connect Poonch in the Pir Panjal region with Tangmarg in north Kashmir, offering a strategic and historic route across the mountain range.

Welcoming the development, MP Mian Altaf Ahmad (Anantnag–Rajouri constituency) described the project as a “major milestone in regional connectivity” that would ease travel, improve livelihoods, and open new avenues for trade and tourism across the two regions.

MLA Farooq Shah also extended his gratitude to all those who played a role in making the project a reality.

“I extend my sincere thanks to Jenab Mian Altaf Sahib Larvi Sahab, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (JKNC), for his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to public welfare,” Shah said.
“My heartfelt gratitude also goes to Hon’ble Union Defence Minister Sh. Rajnath Singh Ji, Hon’ble Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Sh. Nitin Gadkari Ji, our Hon’ble Chief Minister Jenab Omar Abdullah Sahab, and Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Sh. Surinder Choudhary Ji for their kind support and intervention.”

Calling the road a “dream project”, Shah said it would bring people of Tangmarg and Poonch—“connected through deep bonds of blood and brotherhood”—closer than ever before. “This achievement is a testament to collective vision, persistent efforts, and the shared dream of a more connected and prosperous Jammu & Kashmir,” he added.

Officials said once construction begins, the project will not only enhance road mobility but also open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and socio-economic integration across the Pir Panjal belt.
