Next Two Days Crucial for J&K as Heavy Rain, Snowfall Likely

Srinagar: The next 48 hours — October 6 and 7 — are being described as crucial for Jammu &  Kashmir as the region braces for a severe weather system that is expected to bring heavy rainfall in plains and snowfall in higher reaches.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rain and snow across J&K, warning of potential flash floods, landslides and disruption to road and air connectivity, particularly in mountainous districts and along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

All weather outlooks suggest the pattern resembles recent weather systems that caused devastating flash floods in parts of Nepal and Himachal Pradesh.

“Given the topography of J&K, heavy rain and snow can trigger flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides, especially in areas around mountain streams and slopes,” a senior disaster management official told Ziraat Times.

As part of early preparedness measures, the J&K Government has ordered the closure of schools in Jammu division for two days and issued advisories urging residents to avoid travel to hilly areas. Farmers in Kashmir have been cautioned to take preventive steps to protect standing crops and horticultural produce.

“People living near rivers, streams, and slide-prone areas should remain alert and follow official advisories. Emergency teams have been kept on standby across districts,” the official added.

Meanwhile, the Kashmir Valley is expected to witness heavy rain on Monday, followed by snowfall in upper reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and the Pir Panjal range. Authorities have advised tourists and residents to check weather and traffic updates before travel.

Disaster management officials have urged citizens to stay vigilant, avoid venturing near water bodies, and report any emergencies through local control rooms.

“The next two days are crucial. Preparedness and caution will be key to minimizing risks,” the advisory said.
