Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday held a detailed meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-Kashmir), who was accompanied by a delegation from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), to deliberate on new initiatives aimed at strengthening agriculture in Jammu & Kashmir.
According to officials, the meeting focused on introducing scientific research, technology transfer and climate-resilient farming practices to boost productivity and support farmers across the Union Territory.
The discussions also explored areas of collaboration between SKUAST-K and ICRISAT in the fields of crop diversification, water management, seed development, and capacity-building programmes for farmers.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing agriculture in J&K, noting that research-backed solutions and international collaborations were crucial to ensuring food security and improving farm incomes.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted SKUAST-K’s ongoing research efforts and expressed optimism that joint initiatives with ICRISAT would help address local challenges such as shrinking cultivable land, erratic weather patterns, and the need for sustainable farming practices.
Officials said a roadmap will soon be finalized to implement pilot projects in select districts before scaling them up across J&K.
