Srinagar: In a proud moment for Kashmir, Muhammed Daniyal Ubaidullah, a 26-year-old native of Sopore, has been awarded the Chevening Scholarship, the United Kingdom government’s prestigious international award for postgraduate study. Daniyal will be pursuing an LLM in Human Rights Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) later this year.
The Chevening Scholarship is one of the most competitive international scholarship programs in the world. This year alone, more than 100,000 applicants from over 160 countries applied, with only a small number selected for the honor. Daniyal’s selection makes him one of the very few Chevening scholars from Jammu and Kashmir.
Daniyal began his academic journey with a BA (Hons) in Sociology from Hindu College, University of Delhi, where he was elected Minister in the Student Parliament. He later went on to study Law at King’s College London (KCL)—a globally ranked law school. His time at KCL was marked by notable achievements: he served as President of the KCL Human Rights Project (2019–2020) and oversaw the publication of its law journal while also representing the university at various international human rights forums.
He was later elected Vice President of the King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU), where he represented nearly 50,000 students. In that role, Daniyal led university-wide efforts around mental health, equality, and student wellbeing. One of his notable initiatives, the “Bidet Showers Project,” sought to make campus facilities more inclusive.
From 2021 to 2024, Daniyal worked in the United Kingdom—first in higher education, and later as a Data Consultant with Kubrick Group, a highly selective global data consultancy.
Daniyal now plans to return to Jammu and Kashmir and register with the J&K High Court to begin his legal practice as a litigator. Armed with his upcoming LLM and international experience, he aims to contribute to rights-based legal and policy reform in South Asia.
