16% surge in undergraduate admissions across J&K govt colleges: Directorate of Colleges

47,150 candidates admitted in Phase-I; enrollment rises in 106 Government Degree Colleges

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 23: Phase-I of undergraduate admissions to the Government Degree Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir for the academic session 2026-27 has concluded with 47,150 candidates securing admission, marking an increase of about 16 per cent over the corresponding phase of the previous session, when around 40,800 admissions were recorded.

Of the total admissions this year, 35,040 candidates were admitted through direct allocation, while 12,110 secured seats through the walk-in mode.

The admissions were conducted on the basis of 10+2 merit through the Centralised Admission Portal, jkadmissions.in, developed in-house by the Directorate of Colleges, J&K. The portal provided a single Union Territory-wide merit list, enabled continuous upgradation of allotted seats through successive rounds and automatically managed migration of fees.

The system also allowed meritorious candidates from any part of Jammu and Kashmir to compete for seats in programmes of their choice, with the entire process—from registration to fee payment—completed online.

Director Colleges, J&K, Dr. Sheikh Ajaz Bashir said merit remained the foundation of the admission process at every stage, including allocation of colleges and allotment of Major, Minor, Multidisciplinary and Skill Enhancement Courses.

He said 106 colleges recorded an increase in enrollment compared to the previous session, while most of the remaining colleges retained their enrollment levels. He described the outcome as a significant achievement in view of the national trend of declining enrollment across several subject domains in higher education.

The Department of Higher Education attributed the achievement to the leadership of Minister for Education Sakeena Itoo, whose reviews and directions emphasised a transparent, merit-based and student-friendly admission process.

Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education Department, Ram Niwas Sharma also played a key role in ensuring that the admission timeline remained on schedule, the department said.

The Department further credited college Principals, admission coordinators and verifiers for the smooth implementation of the process across campuses. It said positive student feedback regarding the quality of teaching imparted by faculty members emerged as a major factor attracting prospective applicants.

Phase-II admissions soon

Phase-II of admissions against leftover seats will be opened for candidates who qualify the biannual or supplementary higher secondary examinations, with their results expected to be declared in the coming days.

The schedule for Phase-II will be notified separately after declaration of the results. Candidates have been advised to regularly monitor the Centralised Admission Portal, jkadmissions.in, for further updates.
