Programme aims to build new generation of craft entrepreneurs and take Kashmir handicrafts to global markets
SRINAGAR, AUGUST 21: The Department of Handicrafts & Handloom, Kashmir, has urged artisans and weavers to encourage their children and wards to apply for the two-year MBA in Craft Management & Entrepreneurship at the Craft Development Institute (CDI), Srinagar, affiliated with the University of Kashmir.
The Department said the specialised postgraduate programme is aimed at developing a new generation of professionally trained craft entrepreneurs who can help take Jammu & Kashmir’s traditional handicrafts and handloom products to national and international markets.
A key attraction for eligible candidates is that the Government will reimburse the entire tuition fee for the two-year postgraduate course, subject to the prescribed eligibility criteria.
The Department said interested artisans and weavers seeking reimbursement will have to produce an Income Certificate issued by the competent authority to establish their eligibility.
The programme combines craft, design, technology, management and entrepreneurship, providing students with an understanding of the craft economy as well as emerging opportunities in product development, branding, marketing and enterprise management.
A spokesman of the Department said the programme could provide a strong foundation for craft entrepreneurship and enterprise development in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly by enabling the younger generation from artisan families to convert traditional skills and heritage into sustainable businesses.
“Traditional crafts possess enormous economic and export potential and a professionally trained young generation can play a decisive role in converting this heritage into sustainable enterprises, creating employment opportunities and globally competitive brands,” the spokesman said.
The Department also highlighted the role of CDI in promoting professionalism, innovation and entrepreneurship in the handicrafts sector. According to the Department, the Institute’s alumni have ventured into businesses linked to Kashmir’s traditional crafts, while its integrated academic approach equips students with skills required across the craft value chain.
The Department further said it is working towards establishing a ‘startup launch pad’ for students completing the MBA programme, with the objective of helping them translate their professional training into viable craft enterprises and generate employment.
The initiative is being positioned as part of the Government’s broader effort to strengthen entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable livelihoods in the handicrafts and handloom sector.
The Department has called upon eligible candidates, particularly children and wards of artisans and weavers, to make use of the opportunity and apply within the prescribed admission schedule.
