Srinagar — The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu & Kashmir State Centre (IEIJKSC), in collaboration with the Environmental Policy Group (EPG), will organize a one-day seminar on April 5, 2025, to mark World Water Day.
The event, themed “Glacier Preservation,” aims to address critical environmental challenges facing the Himalayan region, particularly the rapid melting of glaciers, a vital water source for millions.
The seminar will be held at the IEI J&K State Centre Auditorium in Church Lane, Sonwarbagh, Srinagar, starting at 3 PM. Prof. Dr. Shakil A. Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Kashmir, will be the Chief Guest. Dr. Romshoo, a renowned expert in earth sciences and environmental sustainability, is expected to deliver a keynote address on strategies for glacier conservation and sustainable water management.
Er. Iftikhar Ahmad Hakim, Chairman of IEIJKSC, emphasized the urgency of the theme, stating, “Glaciers in Jammu and Kashmir are not just ecological treasures but lifelines for our communities. This seminar seeks to foster dialogue among engineers, policymakers, and environmentalists to devise actionable solutions.”
Fair Bakshi, Convener of EPG and Dr. Jahangee Ali, Honorary Secretary of IEIJKSC, highlighted the collaborative effort to raise awareness about climate-driven threats to water security.
“Preserving glaciers is integral to safeguarding our future. This event will bridge technical expertise with grassroots environmental advocacy,” Faiz Bakshi added.
The seminar aligns with global World Water Day observances, which underscore the importance of freshwater resource management. In J&K, where glaciers feed major river systems like the Indus and Jhelum, their preservation is critical for agriculture, hydropower, and drinking water.
Engineers, researchers, students, and environmental enthusiasts have been invited to attend the seminar. For details, contact the IEIJKSC office in Srinagar.
