J&K Crop Insurance Scheme: J&K Bank issues important notice for farmers

Ziraat Times Team Report

Srinagar: The J&K Bank has issued an important announcement regarding the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for Rabi season 2024. This flagship crop insurance scheme aims to provide financial support to farmers in Jammu & Kashmir who face crop losses due to natural calamities.

According to J&K Bank sources, for farmers availing loans under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) facility for notified crops, such as paddy and maize, the scheme is automatically applicable. However, those wishing to opt out of the scheme must submit a declaration by 8th December 2024. Failure to submit the declaration will result in automatic enrollment for this season, ensuring coverage against risks like drought, floods, hailstorms, and pests.

Farmers participating in this program will pay only 20% of the insurance premium for Rabi crops. The remaining premium is subsidized by the government. The last date for enrollment in this scheme is 15th December 2024.

The PMFBY has played a critical role in mitigating risks associated with agriculture in the country. J&K has implemented this scheme after mutiple delays. Yet, challenges remain, including timely settlement of claims, limited awareness, and gaps in implementation.

Farmers are encouraged to take advantage of the scheme and seek clarifications through the toll-free number 1800 890 2122. This initiative aligns with national efforts to strengthen the agricultural economy and reduce the vulnerability of farmers in climatically sensitive regions like Jammu & Kashmir.
