Srinagar: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted raids at more than 30 places, including the premises of former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik, as part of its investigation into alleged corruption linked to the awarding of a Kiru Hydroelectric project contract in J&K.
Sources told Ziraat Times that the raids were conducted in the ongoing probe over the corruption allegations in the award of the contract of the Kiru Power Project.
The Kiru Hydroelectric Power Project (KHEP) in Jammu and Kashmir promises to be a vital source of renewable energy for the region. However, it has also become embroiled in allegations of corruption surrounding its contracts, casting a shadow over its potential benefits.
Situated on the Chenab River in Kishtwar district, KHEP is a 624 MW capacity run-of-the-river project. Construction began in 2013 with an estimated cost of ₹2,200 crore (₹22 billion).
Upon completion, KHEP is expected to generate 2,050 million units of electricity annually, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and enhancing power security in the region.
Corruption Allegations:
The CBI is looking into the reported cases of favoritism towards a specific firm during the tendering process, potentially leading to inflated costs and unfair treatment of other qualified bidders.
If proven, these allegations could lead to significant financial losses, project delays, and erosion of public trust in the project and government institutions.
Satya Pal Malik, known for his anti-corruption stance, has denied any wrongdoing. However, the raids raise questions about potential involvement or knowledge of irregularities.
Current Status of the Investigation
The CBI investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been formally filed. The outcome will determine the project’s future and any potential penalties or corrective actions.
