EPG calls for ‘Miyawaki Technique’ to re-build Kashmir’s forests

ZT News Network

Srinagar, March 21: On the eve of International Day of Forests, Environmental Policy Group (EPG) has called upon adoption of “MIYAWAKI Technique” of plantation to build dense native forests.

In a statement to Ziraat Times, Faiz Bakshi, convenor of EPG said that this approach, pioneered by Japanese biologist Akira Miyawaki, ensures plant growth is 10 times faster and 30 times denser by planting many native species in the same area and becomes maintainance free after 3 years.

“The technique is used worldover including India and neighbouring countries with resounding results. Having said so let us introspect how we respond to the teachings of the faith we follow and lofty resolutions adopted adopted in highest policy making houses”, Mr Faiz said.

“About 1400 years ago the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) said when the day of judgement comes when one of you is holding a seedling in hand, if you are able to plant it before the day arrives, do so. He also said planting a tree for the benefit of people will be an act perpetual charity( Sadqa Jaria)”, EPG said.

“The experts on botany, scientists, forests, floriculture, horticulture and plant lovers may opine why the MIYAWAKI Technique is not being adopted here. If it has been a highly success story across Pakistan with similar climatic conditions in many areas as ours why can’t it be adopted here?” he said, adding “This could save our forest department lot of efforts in carrying out repeated plantation drive in same areas”.
