Srinagar, May 19: Qul Fruits Kashmir in collaboration with CIV Italia on Tuesday launched IVAR, described as India’s first platform dedicated to protected fruit varieties and genetics management, at an event held in Srinagar.

The initiative aims to promote innovation, scientific orchard management and advanced fruit cultivation practices, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture sector.

The press conference was addressed by Khuram Mir, Founder of Qul Fruits, Federico Stanzani, Managing Director of CIV Italia, and Pier Filippo Tagliani, Vice Chairman of CIV.

IVAR has been established as a strategic joint venture between Qul Fruits and CIV Italia to create a structured and globally aligned framework for varietal introduction, evaluation, licensing, stewardship and breeder protection in India, with an initial focus on the temperate fruit-growing regions of Jammu and Kashmir and the wider Himalayan belt.

The event was attended by Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary), Agriculture Production Department, Shailendra Kumar; Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K, Dr Nazir Ahmad Ganai; Director ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH), Dr Mahendra Kumar Verma; and Deputy Director Horticulture, Javed Ahmad Bhat.

Speaking on the occasion, Khurram Mir said the collaboration marked a significant step towards modernizing the fruit industry in the region through access to improved plant genetics and scientific cultivation systems.

He said the initiative would help address disease management challenges affecting the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir and support the development of healthier, high-quality fruit varieties suited to local conditions.

Mir described the partnership as a “unique collaboration” that would bring international expertise and advanced genetics management practices to Kashmir’s fruit economy, which remains a major contributor to the region’s livelihood and exports.

Officials associated with the initiative said the IVAR platform is expected to facilitate the introduction and protection of superior fruit varieties, improve productivity, and encourage sustainable orchard practices among growers.

The launch event was attended by stakeholders from the horticulture sector, fruit growers, industry representatives and experts associated with agricultural innovation and plant genetics.
