Srinagar: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohiuddin Bhat, has proposed relocating the Sub-Registrar offices of District Srinagar to the Old Court Complex in Lal Chowk. The move aims to ease congestion at the Amar Niwas Complex, Tankipora, and to streamline the registration process for the public.
The DC has highlighted in a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh that the Amar Niwas Complex currently hosts multiple key offices, including the Financial Commissioner (Revenue), Divisional Commissioner, and others. The overcrowded premises are hampering routine operations and inconveniencing the public due to the daily rush for registration services.
The proposed relocation would not only consolidate all Sub-Registrar offices under one roof, facilitating efficient operations, but also help revitalize Lal Chowk’s historical and economic significance. Dr. Bhat noted that the relocation could boost the business of traders and vendors in the area, many of whom were affected by the shifting of the Court Complex to Mominabad, Batmaloo. The increased footfall in Lal Chowk is expected to benefit stamp vendors, DTP operators, and other businesses reliant on registration activities.
The proposal also aligns with requests from the Traders Association of Central Lal Chowk, which has advocated for the use of the vacant Old Court Complex for public offices to enhance local commerce. The historic building could serve as a hub, increasing footfall and preserving its legacy. Central Lal Chowk is a member of Joint Traders Association.
Dr. Bhat has requested the Chief Justice to consider this proposal and provide guidance to facilitate further action in coordination with the Revenue Department. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to improving public services while fostering local economic growth.
The matter is now under review, and its outcome will determine the next steps in enhancing the infrastructure for public services in Srinagar.
