‘OneTag’ allows users to change issuer banks without replacing physical FASTag
NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 17: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced ‘OneTag’, a FASTag portability service on its Rajmargyatra mobile app, allowing users to change their FASTag issuer while retaining the existing physical tag affixed to their vehicles.
The new service is intended to give FASTag users greater choice and simplify the process of switching issuer banks without requiring a new FASTag.
‘OneTag’ adds to the citizen-centric services already available through the Rajmargyatra app, including the FASTag Annual Pass, FASTag Local Pass and Emergency Helpline 1033.
How FASTag portability works
Users can access the portability service through the Rajmargyatra app and enter their vehicle registration number to check eligibility.
The current issuer bank will then send a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) to the user. Following authorisation, the user can select a new issuer and complete customer verification and wallet onboarding with the new issuer.
Once the process is completed, the existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number remains unchanged. This allows the user to continue using the same physical tag with the new issuer bank.
The previous issuer will close the existing FASTag wallet and refund the available balance after applicable adjustments.
An interoperable FASTag will have a six-month cooling period before it can be ported again.
NHAI expects lower reissuance costs
According to NHAI, ‘OneTag’ is expected to improve FASTag lifecycle management by reducing repeated production, dispatch and reissuance of physical tags.
The service is also aimed at streamlining the issuer-switching process, expanding consumer choice and strengthening interoperability within the FASTag ecosystem.
FASTag penetration exceeds 98%
FASTag has a penetration rate of more than 98 per cent, with around 13 crore users, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
NHAI said the introduction of ‘OneTag’ would further strengthen the country’s digital tolling architecture by giving users greater flexibility while allowing them to retain their existing physical FASTag.
