SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 12: Filmmakers from Jammu & Kashmir made a strong mark at the inaugural International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026, winning three of the nine awards presented at the festival.
Baba Tasaduq Hussain won the Best Cinematography Award for his documentary Naqsh-e-Daur (The Story of Ghulam Nabi Dhar), recognised for its visual storytelling and cinematic treatment.
The Best Emerging Filmmaker Award went to Ajit Singh Bhasin for Askini: The Guiding Darkness, in recognition of the film’s distinctive cinematic voice and creative approach.
Filmmaker Kapil Mattoo’s Tasrufdar – The Jinns of Kashmir won the Best Film from Jammu & Kashmir Select category, adding another major honour to the region’s tally.
The three awards, covering cinematography, emerging filmmaking and the best film from J&K, highlighted the diversity of cinematic talent emerging from the region.
Several other films by J&K filmmakers also received appreciation during the festival. Batt Koch (The Lost Lane), directed by Siddarth Koul and Ankit Wali, was screened as the closing film and received appreciation from audiences and renowned filmmaker Ramesh Sippy.
Love in Vietnam, directed by Jammu & Kashmir-based filmmaker Rahat Shah Kazmi, was also screened during the festival and received a positive response.
The festival also featured Tasrufdar (Djinns of Kashmir) and Naqsh-e-Daur, giving local filmmakers an opportunity to present their work alongside films from across India and other parts of the world.
The strong showing of J&K filmmakers comes as the region’s cinematic community increasingly explores local histories, folklore, landscapes, contemporary realities and cultural narratives through diverse forms of filmmaking.
The recognition is expected to encourage young filmmakers and emerging artists from Jammu & Kashmir to pursue creative work rooted in the region’s experiences, heritage and cultural identity.
Organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), the first IFFJK brought together filmmakers, artists, technicians, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts, providing a platform for local cinematic voices to connect with wider national and international audiences.
