Charar-i-Sharief, Aug 19: A silent protest was held at the Old Bus Stand in Charar-i-Sharief on Wednesday against the continued closure of major tourist destinations in Kashmir, including Yusmarg and Doodhpathri.
The protest was led by J&K Apni Party District President and advocate Owais Ashraf Shah. The demonstration was subsequently stopped after Shah and several other protesters were detained.
Speaking during the protest, Shah expressed concern over the prolonged closure of the tourist destinations, terming the situation unfortunate. He said tourism plays a vital role in generating employment and sustaining livelihoods, particularly for local youth.
Shah also linked rising unemployment with growing social challenges among young people, including drug abuse. He said reopening tourist destinations could create additional employment opportunities and help channelise youth towards productive activities.
He urged the Lieutenant Governor-led administration to take immediate cognizance of the issue and initiate necessary steps for reopening Yusmarg, Doodhpathri and other closed tourist destinations.
Shah said the reopening of these destinations was important not only for the tourism sector but also for the economic interests and livelihoods of the local population.
