Srinagar, August 12: National Conference member parliament from North Kashmir Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan has urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to reconsider the proposed Sopore–Kupwara railway line, describing it as a project of major socio-economic and strategic importance for Kupwara and the wider region.
Ramzan raised the issue during a meeting with Vaishnaw and stressed that Kupwara, despite being one of the largest and strategically important border districts of Jammu & Kashmir, continues to lack direct railway connectivity.
He said the proposed railway line could significantly improve connectivity to remote and strategically important areas, including Karnah, Keran and Machil, while opening up new opportunities for economic development.
According to Ramzan, improved rail connectivity would particularly benefit the horticulture and agriculture sectors by facilitating faster and more affordable transportation of apples and other agricultural produce to markets across the country.
He also highlighted the potential of the railway project to boost tourism, trade, employment, healthcare and education in the district.
Ramzan urged the Union Railway Minister to consider the project from a long-term socio-economic and strategic perspective, taking into account the aspirations of the people, the district’s growing population and its horticultural and tourism potential.
He expressed gratitude to Vaishnaw for giving the matter due consideration and, according to Ramzan, assuring that it would be accorded priority, with further progress to be communicated in due course.
Ramzan said the Sopore–Kupwara railway line should be viewed not merely as an infrastructure project but as an investment in connectivity, economic opportunity and the future development of Kupwara.
