Srinagar, Aug 1: Apple growers and transporters from several horticulture-producing areas of Kashmir have urged the authorities to expedite restoration work on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44), saying delays in the movement of fruit-laden trucks are affecting the transportation of perishable produce during the ongoing harvest season.
The highway has witnessed periodic traffic disruptions in recent days due to restoration and repair works following heavy rainfall and landslides at several locations. Growers and transporters said the delays have slowed the movement of apple consignments to markets outside Jammu & Kashmir, raising concerns about deterioration in fruit quality and financial losses.
Kashmir’s horticulture sector, particularly apple cultivation, is a major contributor to the Union Territory’s economy and provides livelihoods to a large number of farming families. Growers said uninterrupted road connectivity is crucial during the harvesting season to ensure timely arrival of produce in wholesale markets.
Apple growers from Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama and Sopore said trucks carrying fresh fruit have remained delayed on the highway, affecting marketability of the produce.
Mohammad Yaseen, an apple grower from Anantnag, said apples loaded for dispatch were deteriorating because of prolonged transit delays. He appealed to the administration to restore traffic at the earliest or consider measures to compensate affected growers.
Abdul Rashid, a grower from Kulgam, said his family depends largely on income from apple cultivation and that transport delays during the harvest season were affecting their earnings.
Ghulam Nabi, a grower from Shopian, said the timing of the restoration work had coincided with the peak marketing period for apples, making timely transportation difficult.
In Pulwama, grower Bashir Ahmad said delays in the movement of trucks were affecting fruit quality and suggested that authorities consider facilitating faster movement of vehicles carrying perishable horticultural produce.
Nazir Lone from Sopore said prolonged delays could reduce returns for growers by affecting the quality of apples reaching wholesale markets.
Truck drivers transporting apple consignments also said they had experienced extended waiting periods on the highway.
Imtiyaz Ahmed, a truck driver from Anantnag, said vehicles carrying perishable produce had remained stationary for long periods, making it difficult to deliver consignments on schedule.
Farooq Bhat from Kulgam said delays in transportation were causing concern among growers awaiting delivery of their produce to markets outside the Union Territory.
Another driver, Mohammad Shafi from Shopian, said similar disruptions had affected fruit transportation during previous harvest seasons as well.
Drivers Abdul Karim from Pulwama and Tariq Ahmad from Sopore also urged the authorities to complete restoration work as quickly as possible, stating that prolonged delays could affect the quality and value of apple consignments.
Officials have said the ongoing restoration work is necessary to ensure the safety and stability of the highway following recent weather-related damage and that efforts are being made to restore normal traffic movement as early as possible.
Growers and transporters have appealed for early completion of the restoration work and improved traffic management to facilitate the movement of perishable horticultural produce during the peak apple harvesting season.
