SRINAGAR, AUGUST 19: Vice Chairman of the Jammu & Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (JKLCMA), Khurshid Ahmad Shah, on Tuesday conducted an extensive on-site assessment of Dal Lake to review ongoing cleaning and conservation operations.
During the inspection, Shah visited several locations across the lake, particularly the Gagribal Basin, and reviewed the progress of cleaning activities. He assessed the deployment and functioning of manpower and machinery, including Watermasters, harvesters and grabbers being used for removing weeds, aquatic vegetation, accumulated waste and other floating material.
The Vice Chairman also identified specific locations for deployment of hired lake-cleaning machinery and directed the concerned officers to ensure its planned and effective utilisation at these spots to intensify cleaning operations.
Shah stressed the need for a systematic and area-specific approach, with priority accorded to locations witnessing heavy weed infestation and excessive accumulation of aquatic vegetation.
He specifically directed focused cleaning and maintenance around SKICC and Lalit Ghat, where the first International Film Festival is scheduled to be held from September 7 to 10, 2026. He asked the concerned teams to ensure that the designated areas are thoroughly cleaned and maintained well ahead of the event.
The Vice Chairman further directed field staff and officers to closely monitor the cleaning operations, ensure that machinery remains operational and is utilised to its optimum capacity, and regularly assess cleaned areas to prevent the re-accumulation of weeds and waste.
Shah reiterated JKLCMA’s commitment to the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of Dal Lake, emphasising that all interventions should be undertaken while maintaining due regard for the lake’s ecological character.
