SRINAGAR, AUGUST 21: The Department of Horticulture Planning & Marketing on Thursday held a meeting with railway authorities and representatives of fruit and vegetable markets to explore modalities for transporting Kashmir apples to different parts of the country through the railway network.
The meeting was chaired by Director, Horticulture Planning & Marketing, Ghulam Jeelani Zargar, and was attended by representatives of the Railways led by Chief Area Manager Kapil Sharma and ACM Railways Jaswant Singh, besides presidents of various fruit and vegetable markets of Kashmir.
Detailed discussions were held on the feasibility of transporting apples by rail, with emphasis on developing an efficient, economical and time-bound transportation mechanism for the horticulture sector.
The initiative is aimed at providing apple growers and traders with an additional reliable mode of transportation, particularly during the peak harvesting season when large quantities of fruit need to be moved to markets outside Jammu & Kashmir.
Focus on logistics, handling of perishable fruit
The meeting discussed various operational aspects of rail-based transportation, including availability and scheduling of railway services, loading and unloading arrangements, transit time, handling of perishable produce, packaging and other logistical requirements.
Participants also stressed the need for better coordination among the Horticulture Department, Railways, growers, traders and other stakeholders to ensure smooth movement of the crop.
Bashir Ahmad Bashir, All Valley President of the Fruit Growers and Traders Association, highlighted various issues and challenges associated with transporting apples by rail.

Zargar underscored the importance of establishing a dedicated and well-coordinated railway transportation mechanism for Kashmir apples.

The Railway authorities assured the participants that the concerns and requirements of the horticulture sector would be examined and appropriate modalities would be worked out in consultation with stakeholders.
