Udhampur, August 7: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reviewed restoration works on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), travelling by road from Jammu to Srinagar to assess the condition of the highway and the progress of repairs following recent weather-related disruptions.
The Chief Minister was briefed by officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and executing agencies about repair, restoration and stabilisation works being carried out on stretches affected by landslides, mudslides and shooting stones.
Omar Abdullah directed the concerned agencies to expedite the remaining works and take all necessary measures to ensure safe, smooth and uninterrupted movement of traffic on the highway.
Describing NH-44 as the lifeline of Jammu & Kashmir, the Chief Minister stressed the need for close monitoring of vulnerable stretches and timely deployment of adequate manpower and machinery wherever required.
He gave particular emphasis to ensuring the movement of trucks carrying fruit and other agricultural produce, noting that prolonged disruption of the highway affects growers, traders and the wider economy.
The Chief Minister also called for greater coordination among NHAI, executing agencies, Traffic Police and district administrations to minimise inconvenience to commuters and maintain effective traffic management while restoration works continue.
He directed officials to complete the remaining repairs at the earliest while maintaining the required safety standards.
The inspection comes after heavy rainfall in recent days triggered landslides, shooting stones and mudslides at several locations along NH-44, resulting in repeated closures and disruption of traffic on the arterial Jammu-Srinagar road.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dheeraj Gupta, senior NHAI officials, Traffic Police officers and other concerned officers.
