Srinagar, July 16: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Wednesday reviewed Srinagar’s waste management infrastructure and environmental sustainability initiatives during a visit to the Achan Integrated Waste Management Facility, where he emphasized scientific waste processing, environmental compliance and accelerated remediation of legacy waste.

Accompanied by Commissioner Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, Mandeep Kaur, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb and other senior officials, Dulloo conducted a detailed inspection of the facility and assessed the progress of key waste management initiatives being implemented by the SMC.

During the visit, the Chief Secretary reviewed various components of the city’s integrated solid waste management system, including door-to-door waste collection, source segregation, transportation, scientific processing of municipal solid waste, biomining and reclamation of legacy waste, leachate treatment systems and environmental monitoring mechanisms.

Officials briefed him on ongoing efforts to expand and modernize waste-processing infrastructure, adopt advanced technologies and improve operational efficiency in line with the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 and national environmental standards.

SMC Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb informed the Chief Secretary that the corporation is pursuing a range of measures to strengthen municipal solid waste management through infrastructure expansion, enhanced source segregation, improved collection and transportation systems, mechanization and technology-driven monitoring.

He said the corporation is also undertaking scientific bioremediation and reclamation of legacy waste at the Achan dumpsite under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0. The initiative aims to eliminate decades-old accumulated waste, reclaim land resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prevent groundwater contamination and improve the area’s environmental quality.

According to officials, the project is expected to transform Achan into a fully compliant and modern integrated waste management facility based on sustainable technologies and best practices.

Appreciating the progress achieved by the SMC, Dulloo called for sustained institutional commitment towards scientific waste management, timely infrastructure augmentation and strict adherence to environmental norms. He also stressed the importance of adopting innovative technologies for efficient resource recovery and waste processing.

The Chief Secretary said effective coordination among departments, continuous monitoring and active citizen participation would be critical for achieving long-term environmental sustainability and improved urban sanitation.

He reiterated that scientific management of municipal solid waste is essential for building resilient, healthy and sustainable cities and urged all stakeholders to work collectively towards higher standards of environmental governance, operational efficiency and public service delivery.

The visit, officials said, reaffirmed the Jammu & Kashmir government’s commitment to strengthening scientific waste management systems, promoting environmental sustainability and creating a cleaner and greener Srinagar.
