Kashmir’s Areko cherries, Scentrose plums exported to Singapore for first time

Ziraat Times Team Report

Srinagar, Jul 18: In a major boost to Jammu & Kashmir’s horticulture exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever export of premium Areko cherries and Scentrose plums from Kashmir to Singapore.

The export consignment, comprising high-density European sweet cherries from Shopian and Scentrose plums from Pulwama, marks the latest expansion of Kashmir’s presence in international fruit markets. The development follows recent exports of fresh cherries and plums from the region to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

APEDA, under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, organised a flag-off ceremony for the shipment on July 16 in collaboration with Osum Food Solutions LLP and Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, Pulwama.

Officials said the export highlights the growing global demand for premium temperate fruits from Jammu & Kashmir, which is known for its favourable agro-climatic conditions and production of high-quality fruits with superior taste, texture and shelf life.

The consignment was scientifically harvested, graded, packed and transported through a cold-chain network in compliance with international food safety and phytosanitary standards to ensure freshness and quality upon arrival in Singapore.

According to APEDA, the initiative is expected to help growers earn more than 50 per cent higher returns compared to conventional marketing channels. It is also expected to encourage export-oriented production, adoption of scientific cultivation practices and improved post-harvest management.

Officials said the move would help reduce post-harvest losses, improve value realisation and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for fruit growers across the Union Territory.

The export is part of APEDA’s broader efforts to diversify markets for Indian horticultural produce, strengthen export facilitation mechanisms and improve logistics infrastructure.

By linking growers with premium international markets, the authority expects the initiative to enhance farmers’ incomes and further establish Jammu & Kashmir as a reliable source of high-value fresh temperate fruits in global markets.
