A recent year-long study conducted at the Veterinary Referral Hospital of SKUAST-Kashmir has revealed alarming findings that demand immediate attention from every cattle owner and policymaker in the region.
Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis (TRP), commonly known as hardware disease—a life-threatening condition caused when cattle swallow sharp metallic objects such as wires, nails and metal pieces—was found in nearly 2 out of every 100 cattle examined between November 2023 and October 2024.
While a 2% prevalence may appear modest, in a region where dairy farming supports thousands of families, it translates into significant economic losses, reduced milk production and unnecessary animal suffering.
The study found that cattle under three years of age and pregnant animals are significantly more susceptible to TRP. Younger animals may be less selective while grazing, while physiological changes during pregnancy may increase vulnerability. This is particularly concerning because it affects future breeding stock as well as milk-producing animals.
The research also identified a striking seasonal pattern, with spring months recording more than double the number of cases observed during other seasons. This increase is likely associated with grazing practices that expose cattle to discarded metallic waste in fields and pastures, although the researchers note that further validation is required.
Affected cattle displayed several warning signs that farmers should recognise, including loss of appetite, bloating (tympany), sharp declines in milk production and visible abdominal pain. In severe cases, animals developed jugular vein distension and brisket oedema, indicating heart involvement (pericarditis), a complication that often proves fatal.
Encouragingly, the study found that oral cow magnet therapy, combined with antibiotics and supportive treatment, successfully treated 80% of uncomplicated cases within three to five days, offering a practical and cost-effective alternative to expensive surgery. Cases with poor outcomes were generally too advanced, complicated by other illnesses or left untreated because owners declined veterinary intervention. The findings underscore the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
An Urgent Agenda for Action
The study calls for coordinated action by government agencies, veterinary services and cattle owners.
For the Government and Veterinary Department, the recommendations include making cow magnets readily available through veterinary centres across all districts of Kashmir, ensuring every dairy farmer has access to this simple but potentially life-saving preventive tool. The authors also recommend launching targeted surveillance campaigns during the spring months (March–May), when the risk is highest, and expanding access to radiography and ultrasonography at district veterinary hospitals through free diagnostic camps to facilitate early detection.
For cattle owners and dairy farmers, the message is equally clear. Farmers should immediately consult a veterinarian if cattle exhibit loss of appetite, bloating, reduced milk production or signs of abdominal pain. Preventive administration of cow magnets to young cattle should be considered. Farmers should also ensure that fencing wires, nails and metal tools are kept out of animals’ reach, inspect feed and fodder before use, and promote proper disposal of metallic household and construction waste to prevent contamination of grazing areas.
The economic case for prevention is compelling. Surgical treatment of TRP remains expensive and is often inaccessible in rural Kashmir. By contrast, cow magnet therapy costs only a fraction of surgery, enables faster recovery and helps preserve milk production, breeding value and household incomes. In a dairy-dependent economy, preventing the loss of even a single productive animal has significant financial implications.
The authors conclude that Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis is not merely a veterinary issue but an economic, agricultural and public policy challenge. While cow magnet therapy offers an affordable and effective treatment option, the strongest defence remains prevention through better waste management, improved veterinary services and greater awareness among farmers.
Protecting Kashmir’s cattle ultimately means protecting the livelihoods of thousands of rural families who depend on dairy farming for their income and sustenance.
