Committee also examines assurances related to Mining Department; seeks timely implementation of commitments
Srinagar, July 30: The Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Government Assurances on Thursday reviewed the Action Taken Report (ATR) on assurances related to the Information Department, directing officials to finalise the Draft Media Policy 2026 and the media accreditation process in a time-bound manner while assessing measures to tackle fake news and misinformation.
The meeting, held at the Assembly Complex, was chaired by Committee Chairman Ali Mohammad Sagar and attended by committee members Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Mir, Chander Prakash Ganga, Dr Devinder Kumar Manyal, Sheikh Ahsan Pardesi, Mehraj Malik and Shabir Ahmad Kullay, besides senior officers from the Information and Mining departments.
The committee reviewed assurances made on the floor of the House regarding initiatives to curb fake news, counter misinformation and strengthen the dissemination of authentic and timely government information.
Officials informed the committee that the Draft Media Policy 2026 proposes the prevention of misinformation and fake news as one of its key objectives. They also said the draft policy envisages the appointment of dedicated nodal officers in each government department to help curb the spread of misinformation and ensure dissemination of verified information.
The committee also reviewed progress on measures aimed at strengthening institutional mechanisms for verification of information, promoting fact-based public communication and enhancing public awareness against misleading and fabricated content.
Emphasising the importance of responsible communication in the digital era, Sagar said effective coordination among departments and timely dissemination of verified information were essential to counter misinformation and maintain public confidence. He also called for sustained public awareness campaigns, capacity building and the adoption of modern communication tools.
The committee directed the Information Department to expedite implementation of all assurances made before the House and ensure regular monitoring of progress.
During the meeting, several committee members called for clearly defining the authority responsible for taking action against fake news and misinformation. They also suggested that the proposed media policy should include provisions for action against self-styled journalists and mechanisms to regulate digital and social media platforms.
The members further recommended making a journalism degree mandatory for journalists, restricting official invitations to registered journalists and framing a law to tackle fake news and misinformation. They also called for clear guidelines to determine who qualifies as a journalist.
The committee also reviewed the Action Taken Report on assurances related to the Mining Department. It sought updates on measures taken to regulate mining activities, strengthen enforcement and implement commitments made before the Legislature.
Chairing the review, Sagar directed Mining Department officials to ensure effective implementation of legislative assurances through coordinated efforts, regular monitoring and strict adherence to government decisions. He said timely compliance with assurances reflected the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and responsive governance.
