Srinagar, June 26: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday joined mourners at Zadibal in Srinagar on the solemn occasion of Youm-e-Ashura, paying tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions and participating in the traditional observances marking the day.
The Chief Minister joined mourners at Zadibal and distributed water and milk at a sabeel set up along the procession route as a mark of respect and solidarity. He was accompanied by Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq. During his visit, Omar Abdullah interacted with mourners and volunteers facilitating the observance of Youm-e-Ashura and participated in the distribution of refreshments, appreciating the spirit of service and devotion displayed by volunteers.
Zadibal, one of the principal centres of Muharram observances in Srinagar, witnessed large gatherings of mourners participating in the traditional Ashura procession amid elaborate arrangements by the administration to ensure its smooth and peaceful conduct.
The Chief Minister also visited the revered Shrine of Mir Shamsu-din Araqi, where he offered Fatihah and prayed for peace, harmony and the well-being of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha joined the Zuljinah procession at Zadibal and served refreshments among the mourners. Paying homage to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, the Lieutenant Governor said their supreme sacrifice for peace, love and compassion remains an eternal guide for building a society rooted in equality and harmony.
He said Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) gave a timeless message of selfless service and compassion for the underprivileged, adding that society must draw inspiration from his noble life and virtues by walking the righteous path of truth, justice and humanity.
Youm-e-Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, commemorates the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), his family members and companions at Karbala. The day is marked by mourning processions, majalis (religious congregations) and sabeels, where water and refreshments are distributed in remembrance of the hardships endured by Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
