KFF Seeks KCC Loan Waiver, Crop Insurance After Hailstorm Losses

Ziraat Times News Desk

Srinagar, June 19: The Kashmir Farmers’ Federation (KFF) on Thursday demanded a complete waiver of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans for farmers affected by recent hailstorms and windstorms and called for the immediate rollout of a crop insurance scheme in Jammu and Kashmir.

The demands were raised during an extraordinary meeting of the federation chaired by its president, Advocate Abdul Rashid Hanjura.

KFF urged the government to declare the extensive damage caused to fruit orchards and standing crops by successive wind and hailstorm events as a natural calamity, saying the losses had severely impacted the livelihoods of farmers and horticulturists.

The federation sought a complete waiver of KCC loans, arguing that affected farmers were in no position to repay bank loans and accrued interest. It also demanded a time-bound assessment of crop losses and adequate compensation for affected growers.

Addressing the meeting, Hanjura said fruit growers and farmers had suffered consecutive years of crop damage due to unseasonal weather, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. He said growers’ associations had repeatedly appealed to both the Union and J&K governments for debt relief, financial compensation, effective crop insurance coverage for the horticulture sector and interest exemptions on cash credit accounts.

The meeting also decided to launch a membership drive to strengthen the farmers’ movement and make it more effective in safeguarding the interests of the farming community.

“Kissan movement will be made more vibrant, forceful and result-oriented to protect the interests of farmers,” Hanjura said.
